~ Valerie concerned about sending the picture of the entity to Lou, from "Mayfair Watchers' Society - The Woman on The Bus" |
The Woman on The Bus is a grotesque cryptid created by Trevor Henderson. She appears as the main antagonist of the debut episode of Mayfair Watchers' Society.
Appearance
The Woman on The Bus physically resembles a woman, although abnormally tall and grotesque, with several distinct features that mark these attributes. This arcane entity possesses long, badly marshaled black hair and an oddly macabre, outstretched face, visibly devoid of eyes, leaving her empty eye sockets completely pitch-black, as well as two nostrils and a mouth which may open, leaving her visage in a ghostly, agape expression.
The Woman on The Bus seems to be wearing a long dress, presumed to be a robe, that is also entirely black and conceals her body all the way down to her legs. Her skin is white, with a wrinkly texture, giving her an undead physical aspect.
Episode Story
The Woman on The Bus' debut in Mayfair Watchers' Society has given us a myriad of implications on her behavior and morality. A protagonist of the episode, "Valerie", who converses with "Lou" throughout the whole episode while trying to find a temporary bus stop, claims to have felt the presence of the entity in a bus, in her most recent dream, although beforehand, she kept having recurring dreams related to public transport, mostly buses. Val says that in the bus dreams, she's always late, which is strange considering that one cannot read a clock in a dream, however, she just somehow knows she's running behind. Inside the bus, though, she cannot see the driver (who doesn't stop throughout the whole dream), as the glass is always frosted over and the driver cannot hear Val either.
Lou responds to Val's description of her dream saying that it sounds stressful, but "not the kind of thing that'd fuck you up for the rest of the day", Val then proceeds to describe the worst versions of her repetitive nightmare, where she does not know when she got on the bus, nor where she'll stop, this lack of knowledge consistent with an "eternal midnight" outside, as she cannot recognize the streets either.
Normally, she's alone on the bus, but answering Lou's question, she starts describing her last dream, saying that there was someone in the back seats, where the lights don't always work, implying that The Woman on The Bus only appeared in this one dream. Val never saw the figure, and never looked back, but had a sensation that the mysterious entity was a woman, and that if she did look back, something terrible would happen. Lou starts becoming slightly visibly anxious, he asks how the dream ends, Val doesn't seem to remember.
After a long and casual conversation, Lou begins to hear footsteps quietly following Val after both hear a loud scream and dismiss it for a drunk person, and anxiously asks her if she's sure that she's alone on that street, with Val constantly turning down his offer to pick her up. Eventually, she notices that The Woman on The Bus was pursuing her to the temporary bus stop, and asks Lou to come pick her up, but later, she cancels her request, and when she gets on the bus, the inscrutable horror follows her in, getting closer to her, and then heading to the back seats. A creaking noise, like old wood, is heard, the script of the episode states that the creaking signifies that the strange new passenger is on the move.
A strange nightmare lingers in Val's mind, an exact replica of her recurring dreams, Val is tormented by the aura of paranoia The Woman on The Bus emits, even though she doesn't see her yet, and no matter how many times she tried pressing the stop button, the driver wouldn't stop. Lou tries to calm her down, and only barely manages to do so, later, he asks Val to take a picture of the being to prove that what she's seeing is merely an illusion. However, when she sends the picture to Lou, his confidence of the situation's normality is rattled, but he tries to keep everything normal for Val's sake.
Lou hears glass breaking on his end, he gets up to check to relieve Val's fear and confusion, and is shocked to find that there's a large crack on his back window. Val becomes paranoid and starts expressing her regret towards the decision to send the picture to Lou, the telltale creaking is heard again before Lou asks Val to take another picture. She seems hesitant at first, but ends up taking it and sending it to Lou. However, this only makes The Woman on The Bus get closer to Val, her friend is afraid now, but is trying to hide it.
The paranoid Valerie presses the stop button several times, followed by more creaking, but the driver doesn't stop. Val loses all hope of living and thinks that both she and Lou are gonna die tonight as her battery life depletes. The duo hear loud knocking on Lou's end, now just as terrified as Val, he grabs a baseball bat, and rushes to his living room, putting Val on hold, saying that he is going to call the police. Val's speech is shivering, and she keeps telling herself that she just wants to get out, just wants to go home, as the creaking continues behind Val. Later, Lou suddenly comes back, angrily claiming that he couldn't get to the police, as there was a strange sound down the line, like creaking. He starts believing that he has a home intruder, judging from the distant glass shattering on his end.
The enigmatic creaking sound continues, and Val hammers at the stop button, she can't take the pressure and fear anymore, so she sprints down the gangway and knocks at the glass, speaking to the driver. She continues hammering against the glass, with absolutely no response from the driver, infuriating Val. Something knocks against Lou's living room door. Strange creaking noises on both ends, Val’s breath hitches. On Lou's end, a door creaks open, a long silence, save for the rumbling of the bus commences on both ends. Suddenly, Lou begins to speak in an oddly monotone voice...
The Woman on The Bus creaks and rapidly runs down the bus' aisle towards Val, she screams, but her screams are unnervingly cut short. Lou hangs up, and the episode ends.
Behavior
The Woman on The Bus is seemingly a psychokinetic entity, although her exact process of tracking and murdering her victims is unknown. Judging from Valerie's experience, it can be deduced that she mysteriously converts the theme of her upcoming victim's recent nightmares to public transport, and appears in their last dream as a foreshadowing of what's to come, although it remains unclear if her appearance can occur multiple times within her victims' dreams. It's implied that this mystery woman manipulates her victims' thought and action process into not looking back and facing her, or else something terrible might happen.
A victim's dream in this case may likely be considered a vision, as sooner or later, there must be something that eventually makes them get in contact with the entity haunting their nightmares, making their reality at those moments a petrifying, grueling copy of their public-transport-related dreams. It's also heavily implied that she slowly, inconspicuously walks behind their victims until they reach a bus (or possibly a train) and then, after she gets in, she begins to quickly plant paranoia in her victims' hearts, one that gets incrementally graver as she gets closer to the victim. However, we have no direct confirmation of her behavior process, considering that Valerie's setting was the only significant piece of lore we have so far.
Several oddities probably occur on her victim's end, or even more than a single victim, if for example, her target is on a voice call with other individuals, like Val's setting. As mentioned before, everything in her victim's dream, even the more minor details, is replicated perfectly in reality, before the victim's untimely demise. What exactly The Woman on The Bus does to her victims is unspoken of. Another implication is that attempting to take pictures of her agitates her, causing the uncontrollable paranoia and fear in the target's mind to gradually become worse. Scripts suggest that the horrid creaking noise that plays occasionally during the podcast episode is of The Woman on The Bus' doing, as a sign that she is on the move.
Any further details aside from a few minor misfortunes the victims may experience during their pre-death session with the being are scarce.
Abilities
The Woman on The Bus is obviously a powerful entity, not only does she have psychokinetic abilities that manipulate her victims' emotions and thought process, but she also manipulates the settings of her dream carefully to match each other to varying degrees. Not only this, but these enigmatically chosen settings are fit to never give the victims a chance to escape, even in reality. The Woman on The Bus' manipulation is not only limited to the psyche of her victims, but even reality itself, in a way that everything in her victims' nightmares is perfectly replicated when they finally meet the being in person, no matter how erratic it is. This arcane horror can also manipulate phone lines and sound, as she makes it so that her creaking noise replaces anything that comes down the line, making victims unable to call for help.
The Woman on The Bus might also be multi-present, considering that she had been tormenting Val, all while Lou was having a case of a home intruder, implying that she was both on the bus and in Lou's house at the same time, although this is just a theory.
